Before the Cleanup: Get Prepared!

Location Scouting: Pinpoint the cleanup area and assess where the trash might be lurking. Plan your route and consider eco-friendly transportation options like carpooling, public transport, or biking.

Online Campaign: Create a social media campaign or a dedicated website for the upcoming beach cleanup. Share informative posts, videos, and graphics about the importance of the event, its goals, and how people can get involved.

Storytelling: Prepare inspiring stories related to the place you will be cleaning. Personal narratives or success stories from previous cleanups can motivate volunteers.

Online Registration: Simplify the registration process by offering online sign-ups. Participants can easily register, receive event updates, and access resources. It’s a good idea to ask to sign a waiver in advance – simply create it online.

Local Sponsorships: Seek sponsorship from local businesses or corporations interested in environmental causes. Their support can fund educational materials, cleanup supplies, or even post-cleanup refreshments.

Team Connection: Reach out to your cleanup team! Share event flyers, spread the word among friends, and make sure everyone knows the location, date, time, and weather conditions.

Supply Stock-Up: Gather your cleanup supplies. You'll need essential gear, reusable gardening gloves, sturdy plastic bags, labeled buckets (COMPOST/RECYCLABLE/LANDFILLS/POTENTIAL HAZARDOUS MATERIALS), an empty laundry detergent bottle for safe syringe disposal, and a handy waste pickup tool.

Participant Sign-In: Set up a sign-in sheet for participants, with their emails and phone numbers.

Safety First: Pack hand sanitizers, a First Aid Kit, and dress appropriately with long pants and closed, slip-resistant shoes. Have sunscreen for appropriate weather.

Water and Snacks: Prepare drinking water in a big bottle with reusable glasses or encourage to take their own bottles. Think of simple snacks.

Fun: Have a speaker with nice music.

During the Beach Cleanup: Roll Up Your Sleeves!

Logistics and Communication: Stay connected! Use social media platforms and groups to keep everyone in the loop during the cleanup.

Leader in Charge: Appoint a leader who can guide the team. They should brief everyone on safety precautions, including handling glass, navigating slippery rocks, promoting encouragement, and respecting the marine life ecosystem.

Volunteer Briefing: Make sure volunteers are well-informed. Cover the area designated for cleaning, identify cleaning spots, organize teams, and provide cleanup receptacles to minimize contact.

Educational: Talk about the location, the local ecosystem, marine life, and the impact of plastic pollution. Make it short but captivating.

*** Local Expert: Invite experts, such as marine biologists or conservationists, students or just your knowledgeable friends to give short talks about the importance of beach preservation and the impact of pollution.

Cleanup Tips: Offer guidance on the recommended cleanup duration. Remember to stress what not to pick up: needles, medical waste, sharp objects, masks, and personal protective equipment.

Creativity and Fun: Encouraging participants to create art or sculptures using the collected trash; make a contest of “most weird” trash found. Create friendly competitions on who collects the most trash. Incorporate games like beach volleyball, frisbee, or sandcastle-building contests to break up the cleanup and add a recreational element.

Social Media Updates: Keep the online community engaged by posting real-time updates, photos, and videos of the cleanup. Use hashtags, geolocation and tag friends to reach a broader audience.

Community Interaction: Encourage volunteers to interact with beachgoers and passersby. Share information about the cleanup's purpose and invite others to join or support future events.

Leave No Trace: Ensure all trash goes to designated drop-off locations. Leave the beach as beautiful as you found it.

Recycle: If you don’t contact a recycling company, take all the trash with you and put it in related bins.

Dedication Ceremony: Conclude the cleanup with a brief ceremony to celebrate the collective effort. Recognize volunteers' contributions and discuss the positive impact of the cleanup.

Ideal Cleanup Time: Aim for a cleanup duration of 1.5 to 2 hours to keep everyone engaged and motivated.

After the Beach Cleanup - Engage, Celebrate, and Share!

Hygiene First: Remind participants to carefully remove their gloves, wash their hands thoroughly, and use hand sanitizers to maintain cleanliness after the cleanup.

Gear Cleanup: Instruct participants on how to sanitize and store the equipment used during the cleanup. Emphasize proper disposal of gloves and plastic bags in designated bins.

Data Collection: Encourage volunteers to download the Marine Debris Tracker app. This allows them to record the types and quantities of items collected, contributing to valuable research.

Share Your Success: Motivate participants to share their cleanup achievements on social media platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. Encourage them to use event-specific hashtags to create a buzz.

Capture the Experience: Ask volunteers to share their stories, photos, and memorable moments from the cleanup. These visuals and narratives can inspire others to get involved.

Plan for the Future: Discuss upcoming events, projects, or initiatives related to beach conservation. Keep the momentum going by suggesting ways participants can continue making a positive impact.

Sign-Out: Ensure all participants sign out on the attendance sheet. This helps track who attended and provides valuable data for future planning.

Wrap up: Offer incentives as a token of appreciation. Consider providing snacks, refreshing drinks. Say a heartfelt "thank you" for their dedication. End the event with a celebratory atmosphere.  Share stories, laughs, and positive vibes, reinforcing the sense of community and accomplishment.
